Broken Down and Bleeding on the Damascus Road: My Statement of Faith
(Acts 9:1-9)

I am a Christian, a baptised believer in and follower of Jesus Christ. I was not raised or taught from childhood about Christ, and came to Him only after a lifetime of wandering in the spiritual wilderness. Like Saul of Tarsus (Acts 7:58-28:31), I spent most of my life hating and rejecting Christ and all His followers, until, again like Saul, I found myself broken and lost, open at last to receiving His infinite mercy. I was reborn in His spirit on September 6, 2002, and baptized in the Southern Baptist faith, manner and church on September 22.

I believe that a life devoted to Jesus Christ is a life of ultimate fulfillment, and a gift from God available to anyone simply by opening the door to His invitation. However, I do not believe that anyone who passes on or is ignorant of this gift is by any means automatically evil, bad, or otherwise to be shunned or hated. If it were not for many, many devout Christians, including my beloved wife Bonnie, who loved me despite my many failings and shortcomings, and who prayed for me unceasingly over the years, I would not be here today. I believe we must all pray unceasingly for these lost souls, and were in fact placed here and in these situations by God in part to do exactly that.

Specifically, what I believe:

I believe the entire Bible is the Inspired Word of God; authored by the Holy Spirit, penned through God's chosen men. It is the infallible, inerrant Word of God and is the supreme and final authority for Christians in all matters of faith and practice.

There is one and only one living and true God who reveals Himself to us as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, with distinct personal attributes, but without division of nature, essence, or being.

Christ is the eternal Son of God. In His incarnation as Jesus Christ he was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary who became flesh to reveal God to man and to become the Savior of the lost world. Through His death on the cross He made provision for the redemption of men from sin. He was raised from the dead with a glorified body. He ascended into heaven and is now exalted at the right hand of God where He is the One mediator, partaking of the nature of God and of man, and in whose Person is effected the reconciliation between God and man. He will return in power and glory to judge the world and to consummate His redemptive mission.

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God. He inspired holy men of old to write the Scriptures. Through illumination He enables men to understand truth. He exalts Christ. He convicts of sin, of righteousness and of judgment. He calls men to the Savior, and effects regeneration. He cultivates Christian character, comforts believers, and bestows the spiritual gifts by which they serve God through His Church. He seals the believer unto the day of final redemption. His presence in the Christian is the assurance of God to bring the believer into the fullness of the stature of Christ. He enlightens and empowers the believer and the Church in worship, evangelism, and service.

Man was created by the special act of God, in His own image to have fellowship with Him but became alienated in that relationship through sinful disobedience. Only the grace of God can bring man into His holy fellowship and enable man to fulfill the creative purpose of God.

Salvation involves the redemption of the whole man, and is offered freely to all that accept Jesus Christ as Savior, who by His own blood obtained eternal redemption for the believer.

I believe every Christian should live for Christ. By obedience to the Word of God and daily yielding to the Spirit of God, every believer should mature and be conformed to the image of Christ.

I believe that a New Testament Church of the Lord Jesus Christ is the body of Christ, of which Jesus Christ is the head.
